Do you have an awesome Cricut idea that you have been wanting to share?  Now's your chance to get published!  Scrapbook Trends Magazine is putting together an entire publication of Cricut projects, and they have put out an open call for projects.  They want to see your layouts, your cards and tags, home decor, party items, vinyl lettering - just about anything you have made with your Cricut.

Unfortunately, there's not much time left to submit project ideas.  The deadline is this coming Sunday (September 5, 2010) at 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time.  Submissions should be sent to submit@northridgepublishing.com.

Cricut Sports Mania: Colts vs. Saints

Who's ready for the big Super Bowl game this weekend?  I know we are - big Colts fans here!  Anyway, I thought I would put up a quick post about the pair of helmets I made with the Cricut Sports Mania cartridge.  First things first, here's a picture...

Cricut Sports Mania - Colts vs. Saints

My twelve year old needed these for a school project, and of course, his mom (yep, that's me!) looks for *any* reason to go play with her scrapbooking tools.  Anyway, these were super simple to make, and my son and his classmates were thrilled with how they turned out. [Read more...]

Getting Started with Cricut Scrapbooking?

If you are just getting started with Cricut scrapbooking, I would love to invite you to join a challenge that I am participating in on the message board.

In January, I was browsing through the Cricut message board, when I came across the Lay It Down challenge.  Each week, one of the members posts a sketch or two, and anyone who wants to participate can make a layout based on the posted sketches.  When finished, participants post a picture of their finished layouts.

There is a new challenge posted each week.  To participate, just go to the layouts section of the message board (here's a link: http://www.cricut.com/messageboard/tt.aspx?forumid=6), and search for the thread titled "Laying It Down (LID) Weekly LO Challenge".  Take it from me, it's not only a lot of fun, it's a great motivator!

I haven't finished this week's project yet, but here's the layout for the first challenge I participated in...

That was not only my first project for the challenge, it was the first layout I have completed - ever!  [Read more...]

Fun Cricut Christmas Crafts

As we have less than two weeks left until December 25th, I thought I would share with you a couple of Cricut Christmas crafts I have been working on...

The first is a stuffed two liter bottle.  I wish I could take credit for this clever idea, but I actually scraplifted it from Scrapalette on the Cricut message board.  She made hers as a teacher appreciation gift, but I think it works just as well for Christmas too!  Anyway, here's a picture of mine...

Cricut Christmas Crafts - 2 Liter Bottle

My sixth grader is giving this one to a classmate for Christmas.  He is her "Secret Santa" and this is the main gift that she will receive on Friday (their last day of school).  Anyway, it's stuffed mostly with her favorite candy, but there's also gel pens and other school supplies and trinkets hiding inside.  I wish I could be there when she tries to figure out how to get her gifts out.  Nope, they won't come out through the cap opening, but if you keep reading, I will let you in on the secret! Make Freezer Paper Stencil Patterns with Your Cricut

Have you heard about using your Cricut cartridges to make freezer paper stencil patterns?  I have come across a couple of blogs and message forum posts about this, and finally, I decided to give it a try.

First, I have to brag a little.  My sixth grader played football this year, and his team actually made it to the final championship game!  They didn't win, but the fact that they made it as far as they did inspired me to pull out the freezer paper and make t-shirts to wear the game.  Anyway, here's a picture of the tees I made with my Cricut:

Cooking Up Some Fun with the Cricut From My Kitchen Cartridge

I bought the new Cricut From My Kitchen cartridge yesterday, and after taking a look at everything it could do, I could not wait to start "cooking" up something with it.  Unfortunately, I have been so busy playing taxi driver for my two kids, I haven't had much time to play lately.  However, I was able to put together a quickie card.  Here it is...

Card Made with Cricut From My Kitchen Cartridge

As you can probably tell, it was super simple to put together.  I cut the phone at four inches, and used my computer and printer to print out the "keep in touch" message on the right.  It doesn't get any easier than that, does it!

Put Your Cricut to Good Use!

Hey everyone!  Did I catch your attention with that headline?  I know - you already do put your Cricut to good use, so I guess I had better explain myself...

I was recently contacted by Gracie at Imagine That (formerly Everything Cricut).  She asked me to help spread the word about an incredible opportunity that is available right now (until the end of June).  The Lime Light Charitable Design Team is accepting applications for new members.

What is the Lime Light Design Team?  Well, they are a group of crafters that spend a little time each month working on a project that helps to fund raise or benefit a variety of good causes.  Here is some additional information that I took from their blog:

From today until the end of June (Tuesday the 30th) we'll be accepting applications for the Lime Light Charitable Design Team. Members of this team donate their time & talent for such great causes as the Ronald McDonald House, raising money for children's playgrounds, the Houston Holocaust Museum Butterfly Project, breast cancer awareness, Humane Society Animal Shelters, children's schools...

What a wonderful way to give back while doing something you love!  If you are interested in learning more, I encourage you to take a few minutes to visit their website...

Looking for Ideas for Cricut Projects?

Earlier today, I came across this comment from Tiffney H. on another post:

Help! I have a Cricut Expression, and I know there are tons of projects it can be used for but I don’t know what those projects are. Do you have any suggestions, ideas, websites ANYTHING to shed some light on what all I can use my Cricut for? Thanks!

Tiffney, I should thank you! I have been wanting to put together a list of all the places that I get inspiration. Your comment gave me the motivation I needed to get off my duff and do it!

First, though, I have a confession to make.  You see, I love to craft and create, but personally, I'm just not that creative! I'm always amazed at the people who can look at a pile of supplies, and come up with something completely original and unique. Every time I try, it's a complete disaster!

However, that doesn't mean my Cricut is tucked neatly away in a closet gathering dust. Not a chance! Instead, I depend heavily on the generosity of others when it comes to getting ideas for my Cricut projects!

Here are a few of my favorites places for getting inspired:

  • Cricut Message Board - I love the Cricut Message Board! I promise you that you will find a treasure trove of ideas there. As a matter of fact, I try to avoid it unless I have a lot of time to spare - lol! When I visit, I literally end up there for several hours, just poking around and getting ideas. It's great!
  • Bloggers - Once you spend a little time at the message boards, you will notice that several people have links in their signature lines that go to their personal blogs. Visit a few of these, and you will walk away with even more ideas! Many of these bloggers even have projects that are published in popular scrapbooking and paper crafting magazines, which brings me to my next favorite...
  • Magazines - You can find excellent paper crafting magazines just about anywhere! As a matter of fact, when I pick up a few groceries at Wal-Mart, I usually meander over to the crafts section, where they have their crafting magazines, and spend a little time flipping through the issues. I hope my husband doesn't read this - he always wonders why it takes me so long when I do the grocery shopping. That's the reason - heh heh!
  • Regina Easter's Bitten by the Bug website - I know I already mentioned bloggers, but this one is a little different. Regina has weekly challenges (with prizes!), and I'm always awed by the projects that are submitted. It's well worth a visit!

I hope this helps you find ideas for Cricut projects - both online and offline. Of course, if anyone has additional recommendations (favorite blogs, magazines, message boards, etc.), feel free to comment below. We love to hear from you!

Cricut Projects Idea – Bike Decorating

I am always looking for Cricut projects that I can get my two boys, ages ten and three, involved in doing.  I find a lot of great ideas in my Family Fun magazines, and this particular project was inspired by my most recent issue.

BIKE DECORATING BONANZA!
featuring the Cricut George Cartridge

Cricut Projects - Stars

Here's the supply list for the coolest bikes on the block:

Cricut machine
Cricut George cartridge
several sheets of white cardstock
acrylic paint in at least two contrasting colors
a couple of cheap paintbrushes
glitter glue pens

That's just the material list to make the stars.  Of course, you will want to get those stars on to the bike, so here are a couple of more things you will need:

bike flag pole
curling ribbon
glue and tape
scissors

Whoops, I almost forgot the most important ingredient - a nice, sunny day!

The Instructions

(If your kids are like mine, they are going to love this first part...)

Lay the sheets of card stock out in the yard.  You may also want to consider first spreading a drop cloth, because this is where things get messy!

Give the kids the paint and brushes, and let them go crazy splatter painting the sheets of card stock.  After the card stock (and the kids!) are covered in paint, allow to dry.

(Now, for the part you will love!)

Once the sheets are completely dry, load your George cartridge into your Cricut machine, and cut out several stars.  Three inches is a good size, but get as creative as you want - that's part of the fun of the Cricut projects you will find here!

After the stars are cut, let your kids outline them with the glitter glue pens.  Again, you will have to allow them to dry, but once they are, it will be time to decorate the bikes...

Decorating the Bikes

Cut and curl several 2 foot to 3 foot lengths of curling ribbon. Knot a dozen or so of these together for each bike.  Select about half of the curling ribbons, and glue two stars (forming a "sandwich") near the bottom of the selected ribbons.  Tape the star-studded ribbons to the bike flag pole (after removing the flag) and install the pole on the bike (if it wasn't already installed).  You can also do the same thing with shorter lengths of ribbon to decorate the handlebars.

This project is a great summer boredom buster, but it also can be fun for parades, family reunions, block parties, and more!
