Old West Cricut Cartridge Project Ideas

I don't know what I love best about the Old West Cricut cartridge - the western-themed images that can be cut with it, or the cool selection of cowboy-inspired letters and numbers!

This afternoon, I took a little time to browse projects made using this cart.  Everything I came across was very inspiring.  If you need to get your paper crafting mojo back on track too, here are four projects that are sure to do the trick!

  • Over on the Cricut Holiday blog , Joy made an absolutely adorable scrapbooking layout, with the title of "Howdy Pardner!"  The red bandanna paper she used as photo mats was one of my favorite parts of her layout, as well as the twine that she tied around the mats - it gave it a real cowboy feel!
  • Tracy at CraftJunkieToo reached for this cart to make her brother a 40th birthday card.  Her brother and his family are into horses, and once you see her card, you will see how she used a die cut horse cut from this cartridge as her focal point.  Like Joy, she used some jute ribbon (twine) to give the overall project a rustic feel.
  • Thunderbird Lindy made an incredible 3-d set for her daughter to play with using this cartridge, complete with fences, horses and steer, cowboys, and even a barn and windmill - so cool!
  • Dedrah at Blondie's Creative Place used the Old West cartridge to put together a  layout for the Cricut Lay It Down scrapbooking challenge.  She distressed the paper  with a little inking, sanding, and even some embossing.  Even without the distressing, her paper had a real cowboy look to it, complete with horsehoes and cowboy boots.

Well, pardners, that concludes my list of projects using the Cricut Old West cartridge.  Of course, if you have made anything using this cart, we would love to hear about it.  Just drop us a comment below...

Available Now – Cricut Create-A-Critter Cartridge

This past Thursday, Provo Craft announced the release of ten new cartridges, including the Cricut Create-A-Critter cartridge.  Of the ten, this has got to be one of my favorites, and I'm counting the days until it will be available for purchase (rumor has it that it will be the end of April)!

UPDATE:  It's available now!  Visit our Create a Critter page to compare prices...

Anyway, it features fifty different animals - and each one is just so doggone cute!  They have adorable smiles, and come with whimsical accessories.  In fact, there are 100 accessories in all!

It would take me forever to list everything that is on this cartridge, so if this is the first you have heard of it, check out the sneak peek of the Cricut Create-A-Critter cartridge on their website.  Here is also a short video clip from Provo Craft introducing it...

Provo Craft also handed out preview copies of this cartridge to a few lucky crafters.  Although it's not available yet, you can start getting ideas by checking out what some of them have made: [Read more...]

The Yummy Cricut Sweet Treats Cartridge

Have you added the Cricut Sweet Treats cartridge to your collection yet?  It's packed full of goodies, and even has creative features which can be used to cut individual party favor and cupcake boxes.  How perfect for Valentine's Day!

Of course, Valentine's Day isn't the only celebration it's perfect for!  In fact, it makes an even better birthday cartridge.  With all the cakes and cupcakes, ice cream cones and hats, presents, and flowers that it can cut, it's ideal for making die cut shapes for handmade birthday cards, decorations, and scrapbook layouts.

Here's a quick (less than a minute!) video from Provo Craft for even more ideas...

In addition to the shapes, it has a good variety of phrases that can be cut with it too: [Read more...]

Start the New Year with Cricut Designer’s Calendar

<a href=

The Cricut Designer's Calendar cartridge is perfect for anyone who has ever thought about making handmade calendars. Personally, I have always thought about making these as gifts for friends and family (and for myself!), but the idea of creating a page for every month of the year was a little overwhelming. Not anymore! With this cartridge, you can let your die cut machine do all the work, cutting out the names and days of the month and week, as well as making die cuts for the special occasions and holidays that happen throughout the year.

Quick side note:  CLICK HERE for instructions on how to make the August layout on the left.

In addition to making calendars, this cartridge has many other uses. The creative features include two different fonts and coordinating shadows, which can be used as titles for scrapbook layouts and other projects.

Speaking of scrapbook layouts, this cartridge is also perfect for that use! Instead of making a calendar to keep track of all your activities for the month, you can use it to create layouts commemorating all the special events that happened throughout the year, complete with photos. The calendar grid cutout is also perfect for creating photo and journaling mosaic layouts. [Read more...]

Which Christmas Cartridge for the Cricut is Your Favorite?

Well, my craft area looks like a tornado hit, and instead of cleaning it up (like I should be doing), I decided to get online and find out which Christmas cartridge for the Cricut is everyone's favorite.  I know, it's tough to pick just one, isn't it - especially after all the additions that the Provo Craft Company has made to the collection just in the last year!

I think if I had to pick my favorite, it would be the new Winter Woodland cartridge.  I keep reaching for it when I have something to make.  Here's a picture of one of three tags that I made with it last night...

Christmas Cartridge for the Cricut

The other two tags look much the same - just the snowflake cut and the initial are different.  I'm using these tags on my nieces' presents.  They were super simple to make.  I just used Winter Woodland's tag and font creative features, did a little embossing on the top layer, glued everything together, and added a heart fastener for a little bling - that's it! How to Find the Exclusive Cricut Potpourri Basket Cartridge

The Cricut Potpourri Basket cartridge is a mix of popular cuts from other cartridges, and for the most part, is fairly difficult to find. That's because it is exclusively available with the Cricut Expression promoted on the television infomercials.

However, if you already have the Expression or one of the other two die cut machine models -  or even if you plan to buy it, but have a deal scoped out elsewhere - there's good news!  You don't have to buy the infomercial model to get this cartridge.  Here's the scoop...

Cricut Potpourri Basket Cartridge

Recently I talked about the Cricut rewards program.  My advice - keep saving those points if you want this cartridge!  It is not currently available on the rewards program, but I suspect that it's just a matter of time.  Right now, you can pick up George, Don Juan, Accent Essentials, and Plantin Schoolbook for 800 points each.

Make a 3-D Village with the Cricut Winter Woodland Cartridge

Cricut Winter Woodland CartridgeWhen I heard that Provo Craft was releasing the Cricut Winter Woodland cartridge, my first thought was that I really didn't need another Christmas themed cart.  Of course, one look at what this one could do, and I knew I was completely wrong!

Although I like the cutout shapes and fonts on this cartridge, what I really love about it is that I can make an entire 3-D Christmas village with it - what fun!  I have always enjoyed putting together gingerbread houses (and I'm also a big collector of the Department 56 Snow Villages).  I am more than a little happy that the kids and I can now use the Cricut to make a paper crafty village.  I think it will also be great for making Christmas ornaments, as well as using as a template for our gingerbread houses! Have You Seen the SpongeBob Cricut Cartridge?

Cricut Spongebob CartridgeStock up on the bright yellow paper - you are going to need it with the SpongeBob Cricut cartridge!  I have to admit that I never thought this little sponge from Nickelodeon's cartoon lineup would be around as long as he has been.  My oldest son is now eleven, and I remember watching the first  episodes with him when he was just a toddler.  Now, years later, they are still making new SpongeBob episodes (and my 11 year old is still watching them).  However, for the icing on the cake, there's now even a Cricut cartridge featuring this character and his group of friends - who knew!

Some people like paper piecing.  Some don't.  If you buy this cartridge, you might want to belong to the first group.  There are an awful lot of layering options included as creative features, and you will want to use them all to really bring your characters to life and make them realistic looking.  Paper piecing takes a lot of patience, as well as good lighting, tweezers, and adhesive suited for small pieces, such as the Zig 2 way glue pens.   [Read more...]

Card Making with the Cricut Don Juan Cartridge

This coming weekend is a big birthday weekend in my family, and since I had the Cricut Don Juan cartridge out, I thought now would be a good time to talk about it.

However, first I will show you the card I made for my dad, who's turning 60.  It's amazing how the Cricut can even help someone like me, who has two left thumbs when it comes to anything artsy, come up with something halfway decent.

To make this card, I used my machine, as well as a couple of other tools.  All the die cuts - the letters and numbers, the tag, and the flourish - were cut using the Don Juan cartridge.   [Read more...]
