Strive for completion, not for perfection. You can spend the rest of your life saying ' I should have done that or this.' I have scrapped for 'awhile' and find getting started is actually the hardest. Whatever you do, your kids will love looking back at it. Remember to write things in your own handwritting, your kids will love looking back at Mom's (or Dad's) handwritting when they grow up.
