Have you heard about the Sure Cuts A Lot (SCAL) software? It allows you to cut thousands of free True Type fonts, dingbats, and SVG files using your Cricut machine (no cartridges needed).
SCAL has the same basic layout as the Cricut Design Studio Software. However, that's where the similarities end. Instead of cartridges, SCAL gives your Cricut the capability to cut fonts and shapes that are already in your computer.
You can also import additional fonts and images into this software. There are thousands of free fonts, dingbats, and SVG files available for download online. Using the open source program Inkscape, you can convert GIF and JPG files to SVG, which can then be made into die cuts using SCAL.

Where can I purchase SCAL, and how much does it cost?
Sure Cuts A Lot is sold by CraftEdge. Buying it directly, it currently costs $75.00 to download, and $15.00 more if you want the CD-ROM mailed to you. However, you should be able to find it for less by shopping around.
Does it work with all Cricut machines?
Yes! SCAL works with all three Cricut machines - the Expression, Create, and Personal Electronic Cutter.
Do I need anything else?
You will need your computer (Windows or Mac - either one is good!) and a USB cable. The Cricut connects to the computer via a standard USB cable. You may also need to update the firmware on your die cut machine. This is easily done by downloading the trial version of the Cricut Design Studio software.
Will it void my Cricut warranty?
This was one of my initial concerns. Actually, before using this product, I waited until the warranty on my machine expired (one year on electronic parts, and ninety days on all non-electronic components). However, I know of no one that has encountered any problems with their machine based on using SCAL.
What other special features does this software offer?
Like the Design Studio software, SCAL allows you to weld letters and shapes together. It also will let you cut Shadow and Blackout versions of your die cut shapes.
Can I use it to weld shapes and letters from my Cricut cartridges?
Unfortunately, cartridges are not compatible with the SCAL software. You will need to use the Design Studio software for welding letters and images from cartridges.
Can I install the software on more than one computer?
Yes! Sure Cuts A Lot provides a single user license, but the license allows you to install the software on two computers. However, if you buy a license for a Windows machine, you will not be able to install it on a Macintosh (and vice versa).

I purchasec Sure Cuts and I have never looked back. In fact, you don’t even need to purchase the Design Studio software to operate this product, you only need to download the free demo. I love the options Sure Cuts gives me with text. I feel the Cricut cartridges are limiting when it comes to text, and Sure Cuts solves that problem. I highly recommend this product; especially when you can download 10,000 fonts for under $15, and with the amount of FREE fonts there are online, it makes the investment completely worth while.
